Etsy vs. eBay?

As I’m sure it’s listed somewhere on this site, I have a vintage resale shop powered through eBay named Pink Laurel Vintage. I started it when I was working from home as a way to suplement my income as a freelance designer. It actually started taking up as much or more of my time so it’s safe to say I’ve dedicated some very long hours to this shop.   Recently I realized just how many more hours by getting a new job that … Read more…

How to get more Facebook likes

I love The Oatmeal and though I’d love for something I make to “go viral” and make me an instant celebrity with a book deal and opportunities to interview all over the world, I’d rather keep my integrity. Anyway, so this is how you get more likes on Facebook… [psst, it’s a link]…. [image 100% borrowed from The Oatmeal…. I didn’t steal it, I’m just using it to promote his site… honest! Please don’t sue me, Mr. Oatmeal.] … Read more…

Thumbnail fail

Thumbnail Fail

A few weeks ago I wrote about my conquering of the thumbnails when someone links to my pages in Facebook… here’s why that’s important: Not only do images better convey the message, but confusing ones are actually worse than no thumbnail at all. You see that and think “A $400 mattress?! Sweet!” not “I would like to click on this link and learn more about this organization.” Plus it just looks silly. … Read more…

Thumbnails! Just a piece of (not so) tasty cake! [UPDATED]

Finally! A Facebook Thumbnail!

I spent a good part of my weekend trying and trying to get shared links to show something, anything other than the icons in the right column as thumbnails. After countless widget downloads, snippet pasting, and failed cold coding… I finally did it! Well, me and my friend Google Search. And to think all it took was: <!– Start of Facebook Meta Tags by shailan (http://shailan.com) –>     <meta property=”og:title” content=”Introducing dropdown menu effects” />     <meta property=”og:type” content=”article” />     <meta property=”og:url” … Read more…

Laura's closet

As you may know, I am employed at the OU in the College of Liberal Studies. Our focus is mostly older, “nontraditional” students with full time jobs and families and generally more going on than an average 19-year-old. So many students are either far away or just too busy to be part of a traditional college experience and it can sometimes be a real challenge to keep them motivated and feel involved in a community they may not physically ever be a … Read more…

SOPA

SOPA PIPA Star Wars "These are not the droids..."

I took a little time yesterday to support the anti-SOPA/PIPA movement. Not that I have high traffic, but I also blacked my site like so many others. Please know, though I’m in support of measures to reduce copyright infringement (especially as a graphic designer whose hard work inevitably will be / has been ripped off), these pieces of legislation just aren’t the way to do it. The community effort was amazing and I’m glad to see the democratic gears at work. Now if we … Read more…

Held ransom by clowns

Held random by clowns

I can’t lie, I love WordPress. It’s free and easy to use. The plugins are also free but unfortunately not always easy to use. Sometime late last night I lost my mind and decided to update a working homepage slideshow plugin. The creator conveniently replaced my settings file with the default “Test” file full of broken links and hideous images. They also created some sort of monster that not only doesn’t work on Google Chrome, but has a big ugly watermark with their plain-text logo … Read more…

Blogging on the go?

What is this world coming to? How ridiculous is the Internet?! Here I am, just lying in bed about to fall asleep playing some virtual mahjong when I think to myself, “Hey, I wonder if I can blog from my phone? I bet they have an app for that.” And they do! I was able to find, download, install, and blog within mere minutes. All while maintaining this comfortable horizontal state. Bravo, Technology. Bravo. Now, back to mahjong….
